                                                           Experiments of dynamics of small heavy particles in turbulent flows


Abstract:  I will describe some research mostly in the field of dynamics and interaction of small heavy particles with turbulent flows. Turbulence is often said to be the most important unsolved problem in classical physics (due to physicist Richard Feynman). In a more practical sense, turbulence plays important role in many natural process such as in engines, aircraft flights, cloud-climate dynamics and formation of planets. Many of these processes involve non-trivial interaction between turbulent flow and embedded particles. I will highlight my past works in this field. Specifically, we will see how turbulence causes particles to cluster, enhances their colliding velocities and frequency. These phenomena have strong implication on evolution of heavy particles such as in combustion engine, cloud dynamics, planetology.
